This is the life, huh?

For as long as I can remember, summertime at the cabin in the mountains of Colorado with my family has included the daily ritual of Fivesies.  Each evening at 5 o’clock (or thereabouts since schedules don’t rule the day here), the young and the old, great-grandparents to toddlers, take time out of our various mountain explorations, art projects, cooking or childrearing to gather on the deck and herald in the sights and sounds of the evening  —  the sun sinking behind outsized thunderhead storm clouds, bird calls, wind in the aspen trees.

Together, we crack peanuts, sip drinks, watch the hummingbirds at the feeder, play games, tell jokes, talk about the books we’ve been devouring in our technology-free cabin, and speculate on life, the world, history, the future.

When he was alive, my grandfather would say “This is the life!” and we would all heartily agree.  When my cousin was a toddler, he would pipe up “This is the life, huh, grandpa, huh!”

We all can feel it  —  these five o’clock moments together really are the essence of life and such a gift to us all  —  a gift of time and peace and love I wish we could give the world at large.

May you all be able to find a slice of time to go outside, catch your breath, and usher in the evening with your loved ones!  Should this include a summertime drink, here are two recipes to get you started. Cheers!

Elderflower Gin and Tonic

  • 2 ounces of gin
  • 2-3 tsp (or more to taste) Carmel Berry Co’s Elderflower Cordial
  • 6 ounces (3/4 cup) tonic water
  • lemon slice for garnish
  • ice

Directions:  Fill a high ball glass with ice. Add gin and Elderflower Cordial.  Top with tonic water and stir.  Garnish with lemon and raise your glass.  Cheers!

Elderflower Mocktail

  • 8 ounces of sparkling water
  • A couple tablespoons of diced fresh fruit (strawberries, peaches, blueberries, raspberries, you get the idea)
  • 1-2 tsp Carmel Berry Co’s Elderflower Cordial (or more to taste)
  • ice

Directions: Place ice cubes in glass.  Add the fruit and the cordial.  Top off with sparkling water.  Stir and serve.
